Betty Woodman

Betty Woodman (nata nel 1930), riconosciuta a livello internazionale come una delle più importanti artiste contemporanee, ha iniziato la sua carriera nel 1950 come ceramista con il proposito di creare degli oggetti che con la loro bellezza potessero arricchire la vita quotidiana.

Da allora la forma “vaso” è diventata per lei oggetto di studio, produzione e musa ispiratrice. Nel decostruire e ricostruire la sua forma ha creato un complesso ed esuberante corpo di scultura ceramica, il cui segno é il riflesso di una vasta gamma di influenze e tradizioni insieme a un creativo uso del colore. L’artista ha sperimentato in prima persona molte di queste tradizioni nei suoi numerosi viaggi, trovando ispirazione nelle varie culture di tutto il mondo.

Betty Woodman ha studiato ceramica al The School for American Craftsmen alla Alfred University di Alfred, New York, dal 1948 al 1950. Ha ricevuto molte onorificenze, fra cui nel 1995 la Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship del Centro Studi di Bellagio, Italia; nel 1980 e nel 1986 il National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships; nel 1966 il Fullbright-Hays Scholarship a Firenze. Ha cominciato ad insegnare all’Università del Colorado, a Boulder nel 1979 ed è stata riconosciuta “Professor Emeritus” nel 1998. Ha ricevuto la Laurea Honoris Causa in Lettere dalla Università del Colorado nel 2007 e la Laurea in Belle Arti dal Nova Scotia College of Art and Design nel 2006. Sposata con George Woodman, pittore e fotografo di fama internazionale, ha avuto da lui due figli, Charles, video-artist e Francesca, fotografa, morta nel 1981.

A partire dal 1968 le sue opere sono state incluse molto frequentemente in esposizioni collettive e fanno parte di più di 50 collezioni pubbliche, fra le quali: Boston Museum of Fine Arts, Massachusetts; Museo Internazionale di Ceramica di Faenza; Metropolitan Museum of Art di New York; Musée des Arts Decoratifs di Parigi; Museu Nacional do Azulejo di Lisbona; Museum of Modern Art di New York; National Gallery of Art di Washington, D.C.;Victoria and Albert Museum di Londra; World Ceramic Center di Ichon, Korea.

La critica ha sempre riconosciuto l’importante contributo del suo lavoro nel dialogo fra arte e ceramica. La sua monografia “Betty Woodman” (New York:The Monacelli Press, 2006) include saggi di Janet Koplos, Barry Schwabsky e Arthur Danto.
Attualmente vive e lavora una parte dell’anno a New York City e l’altra parte all’Antella, nella campagna fiorentina.

Dal 1983 Betty Woodman è rappresentata dalla Max Protecht Gallery, dove espone regolarmente.
